TEHRAN (FNA)- Agriculture Jihad Minister Mahmoud Hojjati said that Iran is fully ready to cooperate with Gambia in the fields of research, education and agricultural machinery.

"Iran with diverse climatic conditions has successful experience in the field of producing all types of crops," Hojjati said in a meeting with Gambia''s Parliament Vice-Speaker Momodou Sanneh in Tehran on Saturday.

Describing Gambia as a rich country in terms of water resources, Hojjati said that in addition to enjoying enough water resources and fertile soil as well as suitable climate to raise tropical crops with high global demand, Gambia has the potential for aquatic farming.

"Iran faces shortage of water, but it makes great attempts to produce food of 80 million Iranians independently," Hojjati said recalling Iran’s self-sufficiency in producing wheat.

Sanneh, for his part, said that Gambia is a country with enough water and soil, but it needs mechanization of agriculture and procuring fertilizers to boost production and maintain fertility of its soil.

Hailing Iran’s progress in agriculture in recent years, Gambian official expressed the hope that the two countries'' agricultural cooperation would further improve in future.

In relevant remarks earlier in July, Iranian Ambassador to Ghana Nosratollah Maleki in a meeting with International Representative of Muslim African-Americans Akbar Muhammad in Accra underlined the need for boosting economic and trade relations with Africa.

"Africa is the region of opportunities which should be recognized and invested in," Maleki said during the meeting.

He reiterated that there are abundant opportunities and capacities for cooperation with the African countries, but they should be introduced to people through media.

Muhammad for his part, while referring to the ample unique economic and cultural opportunities, urged using the media to introduce the capacities available to promote ties between Iran and Africa.

"West has managed to direct the world and African public opinion using media in its favor," he added.
